Come join the Berlin Convening of IFHP & VDM on the 31st October – 1st November 2024, being hosted by BBU. Exploring the housing situation in Berlin-Brandenburg, addressing current challenges and how they compare with the urgency for access to decent, affordable housing facing many other cities and communities throughout Europe and beyond.

Berlin is an extremely popular travel destination. But what is it like to actually live in Berlin? Coming out of summer vacation overtourism is what is making headlines for many European cities, including Berlin. But is it really tourism that is the sinner when it comes to access to housing? What are pressure points in Berlin? Berlin, like many metropoles in the Global North are facing large-scale housing crisis.

HOUSING CRISIS ON LOCAL, CITYWIDE, REGIONAL SCALE: BERLIN-BRANDENBURG

The housing crisis throughout Europe is so acute that, for the first time, the European Commission has decided to appoint the first ever EU Commissioner with direct responsibility for housing. The position to be filled towards the end of this year.Although factors such as affordability, land ownership, and the challenge of the climate transition are common, the housing culture of each country, region, and city deserves to be understood to address the challenge properly.

There are many facets to acute housing crisis facing Berlin, which we welcome you to explore with us over the course of talks and site visits shedding light on:

PARTNERSHIP IFHP-VDM

This event is part of an on-going series of convenings between International Federation of Housing and Planning (IFHP) and Vereniging Deltametropool (VDM), offering a forum for knowledge exchange pertaining to local, metropolitan, regional issues and challenges.

VDM and IFHP share a common vision, focusing on urban and societal development with a high quality of life as their primary objective. Collaborating on this agenda brings together both the local context and global perspectives to tackle challenges with sustainable and socially equitable spatial development, planning and housing.

VDM offers a metropolitan and regional focus from Eurodelta perspective, complimented by IFHP which is international in scope. The IFHP & VDM Co-lab has been formalized via a Memorandum of Understanding MoU, signed in Fall of 2023, aimed at developed a forum for issues impacting cities and regions.

LEARNING FROM THE CONVENINGS

The Berlin Convening is the third IFHP & VDM Convening. Former convenings: Rotterdam Convening in June 2024, hosted by VDM at Nieuwe Institut; London Convening in October 2023, hosted by TCPA: Town and Country Planning Association, where IFHP & VDM signed Memorandum of Understanding MoU, initiating IFHP & VDM CoLab. Each convening focusing on different facets of urban challenges present in the particular context and culture. The aim is to learn, share, compare and map the diversity of challenges, approaches, practices, solutions across Europe and beyond.
