Als planners lijken we soms de lange termijn vergeten te zijn. Werkend in het hier en nu, vaak met tijdshorizonnen van 20 tot 30 jaar. Om over de politiek en maatschappij nog maar te zwijgen – dat is waar de waan van de dag regeert. Veel van wat we bouwen is moeilijk omkeerbaar en heeft dus effect op onze leefomgeving en samenleving over zeg, 80 jaar. We zullen ons dus beter moeten inleven in de lange termijn: welke veranderingen komen er mogelijk aan en hoe kunnen we ons hier het beste op voorbereiden? Welke consequenties heeft ons doen én laten nu, op de veranderpaden die we voor toekomstige generaties overlaten om Nederland een veilig en leefbaar land te houden? Het is hoog tijd om onze verantwoordelijkheid voor de lange termijn te nemen. Om te beginnen in de wereld van de ruimtelijke ordening

Via een aantal projecten proberen we het denken vanuit de lange termijn bij andere partijen te stimuleren. Door samen met vakgenoten (ambtenaren, onderzoekers, ontwerpers, etc.) uit de dagelijkse gang van zaken en institutionele kaders te breken, komen we tot nieuwe inzichten over de consequenties van ons handelen in het hier en nu.

Bureaubezoek + werkmiddag: Young Planners – Unravelling the Future

De middag wordt geopend door Paul Gerretsen, agent van Vereniging Deltametropool. Daarnaast zal een spreker jullie voorafgaand aan de werksessie meenemen in de wereld van scenarioplanning en uitdagingen en onzekerheden van de toekomst.

Tijdens de werksessies gaan jullie in verschillende werkgroepen de lange termijn toekomst ontrafelen. Er is niet één eindbeeld, het gaat om het verkennen van verschillende paden die in 2100 uitkomen. Bijvoorbeeld één pad vanuit een scenario dat uitgaat van een wereld waarin we constant gefocust zijn op de korte termijn, op de waan van de dag, op constante groei en op het herstellen van wat ons ondertussen aan problemen overkomt. Als we dit tot 2100 blijven doen, hoe ziet de Nederland er dan uit? Een ander scenario beschrijft juist een wereld waarin we zorg dragen voor de lange termijn, actief acteren op problemen die we voorzien, op goed achterlaten van een land voor volgende generaties. Hoe ziet zo’n land er in 2100 uit? En wat moeten we in 2050 gedaan hebben om dat beeld mogelijk te maken?

Mogelijke eindresultaten:

— Schetskaarten van Nederland op verschillende punten in de toekomst, volgens verschillende toekomstpaden.
— Kennis van uitdagingen en onzekerheden waar we in de toekomst mee te maken krijgen en hoe we ons hierop kunnen voorbereiden.
— Bewustzijn van welke consequenties ons doen én laten nu, heeft op de mogelijkheden om in de toekomst andere (ruimtelijke) paden in te slaan.

At the Deltametropool Association, we are increasingly taking the distant future into our work. We have a view on the challenges and uncertainties that we might have to deal with in the long term. As planners, we sometimes get lost in the present and forget about the long term. On a daily base, most of us are working in the here and now, often with time horizons of 20 to 30 years. Not to mention politics and society – which are most of the time where the issues of the day reign. However, we also know that a lot of what we build will be difficult to reverse and will therefore have an effect on our living environment and society for about, another 80 years. As planners, we need and must reflect better in the long term: What are the changes that might be coming and how can we best prepare for them? What are the consequences of what we are doing and are not doing yet? What are the possibilities that we leave for future generations to keep the Netherlands a safe and liveable country? It is more than time to take our long-term responsibility. This can start in the world of spatial planning.

Imagining, transforming, designing and reinforcing our “Deltametropolis” has been the mission of the Deltametropolis Association for more than 20 years now. We do by looking far ahead, with a view on the challenges and uncertainties that we will have to deal with in this long term. Through a number of ongoing projects, we try to bring long-term thinking to the attention of other parties and to stimulate it. By breaking out of the daily habits and institutional frameworks together with colleagues (civil servants, researchers, designers, etc.), we manage to get new insights into the consequences of our actions in the here and now.

Office visit + workshop: Young Planners – Unravelling the Future

The afternoon workshop will be opened by Paul Gerretsen, agent of the Deltametropolis Association. Prior to the work session, a speaker (t.b.c.) will also introduce you to the world of scenario planning as well as the broad range of future challenges and uncertainties it might imply. During the work sessions, you will unravel the long-term future in different working groups. There won’t be one final image. The workshop is about exploring different paths ending in 2100.

For example, you could explore one path from a scenario that assumes a world in which we are constantly focused on the short term, on the issues of the day, on constant growth and on actively fixing what happens to us and our planet in the meantime. What will the Netherlands look like, if we continue to behave this way until 2100?

Another scenario could describe a world in which we take care of the long term, in which our society would be actively acting on problems we can already foresee, aiming to leave a good country for future generations. What will such a country look like in 2100? And is there something we should have done by 2050 to make that image possible?

Possible end result(s):

— Sketch map of the Netherlands at various times in the future, and according to different future paths, societal traits.
— Broadening our knowledge of challenges and uncertainties we will face in the future and how we can prepare for them.
— Awarness of the consequences of what we do and don’t do today – and the consequences it has on the possibility to take other (spatial) paths in the future.
