a serious game
Red&Blue Lab November 2025

On Friday, 28 November, a Red&Blue Lab took place at the Deltametropool Association in the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. In the morning, we discussed the research progress of the PhD students within the various work packages. Afterwards, we played the “serious game” about the fictional village of Maasveen for the first time in a joint setting. This game was developed by Richard Pompoes and Lilian van Karnebeek, in collaboration with Royal Haskoning and Deltares.
In the game, the village is influenced by actions taken by the municipality, residents and project developers. Each party has limited resources and must regularly negotiate with each other. In this way, the dynamics between the municipality, residents and project developers are simulated, and participants are made aware of each other’s considerations and the possibilities for making the environment more climate-proof. The participants took their roles seriously, and it was an enjoyable and busy session.
Later in the day, we discussed the urban use cases and the intention to produce case study reports on them, incorporating research results, location characteristics and the perspectives of various actors. In a broader context, we discussed how we could increase the impact of Red&Blue’s research results. To this end, the Delta Metropolis Association organised a workshop in which we discussed the various research results and brainstormed together on how, where and with whom the research results could be taken a step further.
